Mike Farrell, PURPLE HEARTS shares the story of Daron
Richardson, daughter of former NHL defenceman Luke
Richardson, who took her own life at the age of 14 in November
2010. The tragedy shocked the entire country, including Daron’s
hockey teammates – her best and closest friends. PURPLE
HEARTS examines this remarkable group of young girls’ quest
to honour Daron’s memory, both with their play on the ice and
their youth mental health activism in the community. Their
goal is simply, Do It For Daron. Do It For Daron (D.I.F.D.) soon also encourage people to get help. Muskat shares her story of
became a symbol for youth mental health across the country.

disorders, these thoughts get stuck, playing over and over in
the mind like a broken record. And the only way to lower the
volume is to perform rituals - behaviours such as constant
checking, excessive washing or extreme hoarding to control the
unwanted thoughts. Symptoms can be so severe that that some
patients are unable to hold down jobs, go to school or even
leave their homes.

As many as 1 in 5 Canadians will suffer from a mental
illness in their lifetime and for many, that battle will begin in
adolescence. A panel consisting of national spokesperson and
former Olympian Clara Hughes, TSN “Off the Record” host,
Michael Landsberg and Stephanie Muskat talk openly about
mental illness. As national figures, Hughes and Landsberg
have made it their mission to break the stigma. They speak
to youth to let them know they don’t have to be perfect. They
PTSD and anxiety and credits the Kids Help Line with helping
her. In another story, Jayson Pham’s life changed 3 years ago
when he was hit by a car. He developed depression and PTSD.
He didn’t know how to reach out for help because the stigma
of mental illness was so great in his mind.

attempts suicide once every 3 seconds. In this program, TSN
Off the Record host Michael Landsberg, looks back on the life
of canoeist and three-time Canadian Olympian John Wood,
who took his own life in January 2013 after a battle with
depression. The program includes photos from John’s family
album and his 1976 Olympic Silver Medal win, clips from
the film PADDLES UP!, and comments by business associate
Laurie Davis and paddling colleagues Larry Cain, Adam van
Koeverden and Wolf Ruck. John Wood’s son and daughter
shed light on how they have tried to deal with the tragedy.
