COPING WITH THE BODY IMAGE BLUES

Everyday students are bombarded with images in the media that
make them feel insecure about their own bodies. Using a mix
of dramatic vignettes, humorous animation and real student
interviews, this program analyzes how a bad self image can
damage self-esteem but also why it’s so important to accept one’s
body the way it is. Older teen on-camera presenters help viewers
understand that the media’s image of the perfect body is heavily
distorted. The video includes interviews with teens who are very
happy with their bodies even though they don’t fit the stereotypes
glamourized by the media. For those who want to change the
way they look or who want to become more fit, the program also
emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet and exercise.

HALLMARKS OF GOOD MENTAL HEALTH

This program helps viewers recognize the six key qualities that
define good mental health in adolescence - having satisfying
relationships, being happy with one’s academic achievements,
maintaining clear and achievable goals, being capable of
delaying immediate gratification, making good choices and
resisting unhealthy peer pressure. Having a strong sense of self-
esteem is especially highlighted: if you do not feel good about
yourself, you are more likely to limit yourself and make bad
choices. Each of the hallmarks is clearly demonstrated by teens
in a variety of settings, including at school, at home and at play.

In this Canadian-produced program hosted by Curve Lake First
Nations entertainer Missy Knott, students learn about The Seven
Sacred Teachings and meet Coast Tsminshian First Nations Elder
and Educator, Shannon Thunderbird who delightfully shares and
explains each teaching. With her flair for storytelling, Shannon
describes the virtues of being a good person, taking care of one
another and taking care of the Earth. An invaluable lesson for all.
The teachings - love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility
and truth cannot be used in isolation. You must practice all
of them. To practice one without the other would amount to
practicing the opposite of that teaching. Therefore, to not love
is to be fearful; to not be humble is to be self-centred; to not be
honest is to be dishonest; to not be courageous is to be cowardly.
